Puberty in Girls

puberityAt the beginning of puberty, the hormone levels rise and stimulate production of sex hormones.

In girls, high levels stimulate the maturation of the breasts, ovaries, uterus and vagina start menstruation and secondary sexual characteristics appear (such as pubic hair and armpits).

In adolescents, the maturation affects the testes, prostate, seminal vesicles and penis, and also grows facial hair, pubic and underarm. Usually these changes occur sequentially during puberty to sexual maturity.

In girls, the first change of puberty is often increased breast size (begin to develop), followed immediately by the growth of pubic and axillary hair. The interval between the breast growth and menstruation is about 2 years.

The body shape changes and increases girls body fat. The growth that accompanies puberty begins before you even start to develop breasts.

It is faster at the beginning of puberty, before the onset of menstruation, then becomes slower and generally stops between 14 and 16 years. By contrast, boys grow faster between 13 and 17 years and can continue growing even after 20 years.

The age at which puberty begins seems to be influenced by general health, and nutrition, as well as socioeconomic factors and hereditary. In Western Europe, the average age at which menstruation occurs decreased by 4 months per decade between 1850 and 1950, but has not noticed any decline in the last four decades.

Moderate obesity is associated with onset of menstruation earlier, while it is delayed in girls with extreme thinness or malnourished. Also begins earlier menarche among girls living in urban areas and among those whose mothers started menstruating at an early age.
