Eating Disorders

eating diordersEating disorders, anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating, binge, or any combination of these (or one that falls into the category of eating disorder not otherwise specified) are all psychological illnesses, none less or more serious than the other.

All have their complications and potential physical hazards, all presented in one form or another as an eating disorder and all have their roots in emotional distress and low self-esteem, need to forget feelings and/or stress, need to eliminate pain, anger and/or stay away from people, and foremost, need to live with this problem.

The American Psychiatric Association acknowledged in its manual-DSM-IV-that there are several types of mental disorders related to food, they share an intense preoccupation with weight, food and body shape changes. They divide the eating disorders in Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Food Descontrol syndrome.

Besides these problems there are cases “light” of anorexia and bulimia have been called unspecified eating disorders, because they fully comply with the determinations of the DSM-IV for medical diagnosis or mixed cases of anorexia and bulimia called bulimarexia. They are also eating disorders Syndrome of Overeaters on intake-disorder-syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, pica, food disorders and sleep, Vigorexia, which although not strictly an eating disorder is a mental disorder where the body dysmorphia premium and special care is taken with food, among others.

Authors such as Levenkron and Claude-Pierre, among others, believe that most eating disorders have a common underlying cause species originating from emotional deprivation or emotional problems, bad certain limits with parents or relatives, social determinations – self-perception of body dissatisfaction compared to the socially imposed standards of beauty, and low self-esteem.

Why anorexia, bulimia, binge eating syndrome and binge eating are related to each other and are members of one family. However, there are eating disorders such as pica or Prader-Willi syndrome in which the biological and genetic component may have more impact than family or cultural.
