Dietary fiber and cancer
Dietary fiber is the fraction of all plant foods digested by digestive enzymes and are fermented in or greater degree by the bacterial flora. These fibers are composed mainly of insoluble fiber (cellulose, hemicellulose) and soluble fiber (gums, mucilages, oligosaccharides …). These compounds are present in large quantities in vegetables and whole grains. For a couple of decades is watching his habitual consumption is associated with a low rate of colon cancer, one of the most malignant and common cancers in the West.
Again, we must speak of the Mediterranean diet as the ideal to provide such a valuable fiber. This is contributed mainly by legumes, pasta, bread, fruit and vegetables, these foods are very common in the Mediterranean area, so a diet of these features prevents colon cancer, among other diseases. It also prevents constipation uncomfortable, slows gastric emptying and causes a sensation of fullness, this last property is interesting for the treatment of overweight and obesity.
The mechanisms of action as a preventive for colon cancer are not known deeply. However many variables have been considered as increased intestinal transit (for reduced contact between the carcinogens and the intestinal mucosa), by formation of anticancer substances (resulting from the fermentation of fiber) or by increased consumption of phytochemicals accompanying fiber (antioxidants, phytosterols …). There are many more variables not covered by this paragraph, but as a council that devoted to eating well and healthy is the best variable for any ailment.
